Soldier Serhii Sydorenko
My husband’s name is Serhii Sydorenko. He is a serviceman of military unit T0500 and has been defending Ukraine since June 2024. At that time he already had health problems. He had medical grounds on which he could have tried to avoid military service. But he he went to serve. During his service Serhii carried out combat missions in the Pokrovsk, Chernihiv, and Sumy directions. On June 19, 2026 my husband was in the Sumy direction, carrying out a combat mission. At around two in the morning he got up to get some water. His fellow soldiers found him already paralyzed in the “kitchen” area. Serhii had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. After this, the fight for his life began. Serhii underwent craniotomy twice. There was a coma, mechanical ventilation, a feeding tube, and a tracheostomy. Unfortunately, the surgery did not produce the expected result, and a lengthy and extremely difficult fight for life and recovery lay ahead for Serhii. Today my husband is undergoing rehabilitation at “Feofaniia.” His path is very difficult, but we already have our first great victories. Not long ago at all, Serhii could not breathe, eat, or sit independently. Now he already breathes and eats on his own, sits, stands, and together with the rehabilitation specialist is taking his first steps. But one more extraordinarily important stage of treatment still lies ahead. Serhii needs cranioplasty — a surgery to install a plate/implant on the skull. After the craniotomies that were performed, a portion of the skull bone is absent, and so its integrity needs to be restored. It is precisely to purchase this plate/implant that I am today compelled to ask for help and open a fundraiser.

I began my service in July 2022 in the ranks of the 104th TDF Brigade. At first our unit was stationed on the border with the Republic of Belarus. But the time came when we were sent to the East. We were near Chasiv Yar. Later we were transferred to Kherson Oblast. After Kherson Oblast we moved to Kharkiv Oblast, to the Kupyansk direction. That is where I was wounded. On August 31, 2024, at approximately 17:00, our group of fellow soldiers came under fire. The first strike concussed and slightly cut with shrapnel almost everyone. I did not hear the second strike. I felt a terrible blow and plunged into darkness. As if I had died… Thanks to the electronic warfare unit that covered us from drones, the commanders who planned the evacuation, and above all those daredevils who rushed in on an ordinary pickup truck, all of us — both the living and the dead — were evacuated. After CT and X-ray, a great number of fragments were found in the face, around and in the eyes, in the neck, and in the upper part of the torso. There were complex fractures of the bones of the left forearm in several places and significant soft tissue damage to both arms. Surgeries began immediately. There were no longer any prospects for saving the vision of the right eye, so the doctors focused on saving the left arm: excision of necrotic tissue, skin grafting on the large affected areas, and suturing of the cleaned wounds. The external fixation device was dismantled. Then the bones that had not healed were assembled and fixed with internal plates. That was how my path of recovery began. From February 2025 I underwent rehabilitation. I worked extensively with an occupational therapist, because I wanted to restore the functions of the arm to the maximum extent. Thanks to the specialists of the center, a great deal was achieved. The arm became stronger. New movements appeared. From the new year, due to personal circumstances, I did not undergo rehabilitation. To the extent possible I occupied myself with household matters.
But eventually this progress stopped…
Today my arm does not bend and extend fully at the elbow. Movements of the forearm that allow turning the palm upward and downward — are practically absent. The wrist extensor muscles are very weak, so under load the wrist bends inward. Due to finger contracture the grip remains incomplete.
But I already know that rehabilitation works.
In order to rise to a new level in recovery, I need an intensive specialized rehabilitation course at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. The rehabilitation is paid for. That is why today I am compelled to ask for help.

When the full-scale war began, I was in Spain. In 2022 I returned to Ukraine to defend my Homeland. Since then there have been many roads and various front directions. The Kharkiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Kursk directions. Combat missions, constant physical strain, heavy equipment, kilometers on foot. Over time my knee began to make itself known more and more frequently. The great and constant physical strain took its toll. But the situation finally worsened after one of the combat sorties. We were driving to a mission when an FPV drone struck our vehicle. The car flipped over and caught fire. We miraculously managed to get out and survive.
At that point I severely injured my knee…
The examination revealed necrosis of degree III. The doctors explained that at this stage conservative treatment will no longer resolve the problem. The only option is endoprosthetic replacement of the knee joint. The destruction of the joint is progressing, the pain is intensifying, and mobility is becoming increasingly limited. The longer one waits, the more difficult the subsequent recovery may be. The surgery itself will be performed free of charge. But a high-quality implant needs to be purchased. One that will give me the ability to move normally and will serve not just a few years, but many decades. That is why today I am compelled to ask for help.

I am a husband and father of two children — a 14-year-old son and a 10-year-old daughter. I was first called up in 2023, but was returned due to health restrictions. At the beginning of 2024 these restrictions were lifted, and I was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I defended Ukraine in the ranks of the 46th Airmobile Brigade in Donetsk Oblast, in the Kurakhove direction. Near Maksymilianivka we came under a strike from reactive artillery — a “Grad.” I immediately understood that I had been hit. Due to severe blood loss I lost consciousness. At that point I did not yet even know that the fragments had also struck my head. In Zaporizhzhia I was stabilized. In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast surgery was performed on my head and some of the fragments were partially removed. Then came Kyiv Oblast — a month of treatment while the wounds were being cleaned. After that I was evacuated to Lviv Oblast. There surgery was performed to close the defects in the head. Then came rehabilitation at the UNBROKEN center. A year has passed since the wounding. I was given a Group 1-B disability and discharged from service. As a result of the wounding, both hemispheres of my brain were damaged. The right side was partially paralyzed, the left — completely. Currently the right leg partially engages during walking, while the left does not. I still cannot independently transfer from the bed to the wheelchair. In Poltava Oblast, due to a shortage of the necessary specialists and equipment, my rehabilitation has effectively come to a halt. I need specialized rehabilitation at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. It is for this reason that I am compelled to ask for help.

The beginning of the full-scale war caught me abroad. At the beginning of March 2022 I returned to Ukraine and joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I served in the Separate Presidential Brigade. In 2022–2023 I fought in the Bakhmut direction, and in 2024 — in the Svatove direction. On September 16, 2024, while carrying out a combat mission, I sustained a severe mine-blast injury and a severe spinal cord injury. I now move in a wheelchair. Right now rehabilitation takes up a great deal of strength and time. I am learning to live with the consequences of the injury and want to learn to do as much as possible on my own. I understand that much work lies ahead and that there is no quick path here. I am learning to live anew. The next important stage for me is specialized rehabilitation at the “AGAPE” rehabilitation center. The program includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, gym sessions, as well as psychological and social assistance. For me this is an opportunity to continue working on the strength, activity, and skills necessary for an independent life.

Soldier Andrii Khvorostianyi
In 2022, from the very beginning of the full-scale war, I stood up to defend Ukraine as a mobilized volunteer. During my service I sustained more than one wound. The most severe occurred while carrying out a combat mission in Chasiv Yar. During the deployment of our unit, an artillery shelling began. Two 120-millimeter mortar shells exploded next to me. I sustained shrapnel wounds and a concussion. I made my way to shelter on my own, provided myself with first aid, and for approximately another three to four hours continued to carry out the combat mission…
After the wound, my left arm began to go numb. Approximately half a year later, the first stroke occurred. I survived it, recovered as best I could, and continued to work. In mid-2025 a second stroke occurred. The left side of the body began to go numb again. And again I recovered in order to return to work. At the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, a third stroke occurred. I partially lost my vision, memory, mobility, and sensitivity of the left side of the body.
During an examination at the hospital, doctors discovered an aneurysm, as well as foci of the consequences of concussions and the strokes that had been suffered. I was referred to the Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery, where a complex surgery was performed — a craniotomy and clipping of the aneurysm… I very much wanted to regain what I had lost. Movement. Sensitivity. Memory. The ordinary feeling of my own body. But for a long time there was almost no noticeable result. Eventually our medic brought me to the “Markiv Rehab” Medical Center. And it was there that for the first time in a long time I felt that I was truly coming back to life. The body began to respond better to the work, and along with this, faith in my own strength returned. My nearest goal is to complete one more specialized rehabilitation course at “Markiv Rehab”. It is precisely to pay for this course that I need help today.

Help Army is one of Ukraine's largest and most visible volunteer aid organisations supporting the Ukrainian military. It provides technical, material, medical and other assistance to soldiers, as well as support for the demobilised, children of demobilised parents and residents of affected communities. It operates in co-operation with the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. Through the charitable foundation "Kharkiv with You" established by Help Army, the latter carries out various humanitarian projects. In particular, the Help Army's Music Battalion has been active since 2014 and it has held about 1,000 concerts on the front line. Help Army was awarded the non-governmental Order "People's Hero of Ukraine" (2015), and members of the organisation were awarded state and non-governmental awards.
Psychological rehabilitation for soldiers and their families. The Mazurenko Center (Lviv) and the "Citizen" Charitable Foundation are launching a psychological rehabilitation program for soldiers who were injured during the war. Psychologists of the Mazurenko Center clinic will conduct consultations in an online or offline format. Members of soldiers families can also receive assistance. To participate in the program, you need to fill out an application on the foundation's website. We work to preserve the physical and psychological health of Ukrainians.
The centre has many years of practical experience in prosthetics. Since 2014 the institution has been engaged in prosthetics for the ukrainian military, using the world's leading prosthetics technologies, conducting rehabilitation programs, manufacturing any prostheses of the upper and lower limbs at any level of amputation using quality components from global manufacturers — Otto Bock ( Germany), Fillauer (USA), Touch Bionics (Great Britain).
