Soldier Serhii Mykhailenko, call sign MYKHAS
I am a junior sergeant of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On February 16, 2017, I made a decision that changed my entire life. From childhood I dreamed of becoming a paratrooper, and I did everything possible to make that dream a reality. After completing training at the Airborne Assault Forces training center, I became a BTR-80 driver. In the autumn of 2017, our rotation headed to Avdiivka to the legendary Promka and the Donetsk Filtration Station. Then came the Mariupol direction, Vodiane, Talavikka, the Kurakhove direction, Mariinka, Novoaidar, Shchastia… When the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022, our rotation became indefinite. We worked where it was hardest: Siversk, Lysychansk, Bakhmut, Soledar, Kramatorsk, Dobropillia, Pokrovsk... After many years of service, I was diagnosed with bilateral aseptic necrosis of the femoral heads. Because of this condition, every movement is accompanied by pain…Doctors determined the only path to returning to a normal life — endoprosthetic replacement of both hip joints. The surgery itself will be performed for me free of charge. For the surgery, it is necessary to purchase two high-quality hip implants that will be able to serve for many decades and will allow me to move fully again, work, and live without constant pain. Unfortunately, the cost of such implants is extremely high. I am not able to cover such a sum on my own, and so today I am compelled to ask for help.

In 2022, I went to the military recruitment office on my own. At the time, I was not accepted. I had no military experience and had a Group 3 disability. My desire to defend Ukraine proved stronger than fear, doubt, and limitations. On July 7, 2023, I voluntarily joined the ranks of the SBGS and took the oath of loyalty to Ukraine. I had the honor of serving in the 3rd Luhansk Border Detachment “Pomsta.” On April 12, 2024, while carrying out a combat mission in the Serebryansky Forest in Luhansk Oblast I sustained a severe mine-blast injury. A fragment passed through my right lung and damaged my spinal cord. Then came the stabilization point, Sloviansk, Dnipro… And then long months of hospitals, surgeries, and rehabilitation. Kyiv. Rivne. Latvia. I am learning to live again. What was once ordinary and simple now requires incredible effort. Today I need to continue specialized rehabilitation at the “AGAPE” center. It is rehabilitation that gives me a chance at recovery, a chance to return to a full life to the greatest extent possible after such a wound.

During 2015–2020, Serhii participated in the ATO and JFO. In 2022, a Medical and Social Expert Commission recognized him as a person with a Group 2 disability for life, connected to the defense of the Homeland. In the first days of the full-scale invasion he approached the TCC and insisted that he be called up to defend the country. On February 26, 2022, he was mobilized into military unit A3013. He had the call sign MARK, was a regular soldier, an anti-aircraft gunner, and defended the airspace of Khmelnytsk Oblast. On January 25, 2024, while on combat duty, Serhii lost consciousness and fell into a coma… The doctors said: 3 days, then 5–7–10 — however long the body could hold out. They also warned that even if he survived, there would be many consequential illnesses ahead... For a whole month, Serhii remained in the intensive care unit in a coma, almost the entire time with a temperature above 40°C, periodically connected to a ventilator. On February 23, 2024, he was transported by ambulance — with a feeding tube, a tracheostomy, in a semi-conscious state and with a fever — to the “Modrichi” rehabilitation center, where he spent another month in intensive care, followed by 2 months of rehabilitation. And all of this at their own expense. In May 2024, Serhii was brought back to Khmelnytskyi for a second surgery... Following a Military Medical Commission examination, he was discharged from service. Serhii currently has a Group 1 disability and requires constant outside care.
But he is, by nature, a fighter. There has not been a single day that he has not trained. Serhii was bedridden. Then he moved in a wheelchair. Today he already walks independently with a cane. For more than half a year he did not speak. Thanks to speech therapists, his speech is gradually recovering. Right now Serhii is in great need of specialized rehabilitation at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. This is a chance to continue his recovery and return to the fullest possible life.

Soldier Anatolii Khmil, call sign KANO
I have been a contract serviceman since October 2021. Until 2024, I served in the city of Marhanets, and later transferred to combat military unit A4820. On April 2, 2025, while at a position in Donetsk Oblast, I sustained a severe spinal injury. I underwent treatment, rehabilitation, endured pain, and believed that I would be able to return to normal life and service. In June 2025, during a Military Medical Commission examination, doctors discovered a spinal hernia. A complex surgery was recommended, along with the installation of a transpedicular spinal system (TPS), which was meant to stabilize the damaged spine and provide a chance for recovery. However, due to a sharp deterioration in my health, I agreed to the surgery without the installation of the TPS... But already on the 20th day after the surgery, I was struck again by severe pain. During a repeated Military Medical Commission examination, the worst became known — a hernia recurrence had occurred, and further treatment without the installation of the TPS is no longer possible. Today I continue to serve in the combat unit. Even despite the restrictions imposed by the Military Medical Commission, and constant back pain. Today I am compelled to ask for help. To carry out the treatment and stabilize the spine, a set of implants for the transpedicular system is required. I am unable to pay for it on my own. This system is my chance to avoid disability, to move normally again, to live without constant pain.

Before the full-scale war, I worked as a long-haul truck driver. February 24 found me in Cherkasy. The road home to Lviv took a day and a half: there was no fuel, traffic jams everywhere, tension in the air… I am a former serviceman; I left the military back in 2004. So as soon as I got home, I immediately went to the enlistment office. I went to the Territorial Defense. In April 2022, I was already in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I served in the 16th Separate Army Aviation Brigade as a driver in the Donetsk region. On July 17, 2022, we came under enemy artillery fire with cluster munitions. That was the day that changed everything. I sustained severe injuries — traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. In the first days, the doctors gave no prognosis: whether I would survive, whether I would be able to walk. After four months of treatment, I was discharged from service due to my serious condition. I thought that a full state rehabilitation program would follow. But its capabilities are not enough for injuries like mine. Thanks to a fellow soldier, I first got to the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of NCSIU. It was there that they began helping me get back on my feet. I have already completed more than one course and I see the results. Now I move with crutches. To keep moving forward, I need another course of specialized rehabilitation at this center. But its cost is beyond what my family can afford. That is why I am forced to ask for help again.

I am a serviceman. On February 24, my family woke up to the sounds of explosions. Already on February 25, I was in the military. I served in the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade. My combat path ran through the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk directions. During one of the combat missions, I was wounded in the forearm and sustained a concussion. From that moment, my body began to fail — the first pain appeared in my hip joints. Evacuation, hospital treatment, and rehabilitation helped me get back on my feet — and I returned to the ranks. The constant carrying of heavy equipment, living in dugouts, and daily physical strain only worsened the problem that had started after the injury. The joint pain became stronger and did not go away.
Eventually, I turned to doctors and underwent examination. Diagnosis: bilateral coxarthrosis, stage III on the right and stage II on the left; combined contracture of the right hip joint; chronic pain syndrome. This means one thing — I need endoprosthetic replacement of both hip joints. Doctors are ready to perform the surgery itself free of charge. But it is necessary to purchase high-quality implants that will last for many years and give me a chance at a full life without constant pain. I cannot manage without outside help, so I am forced to ask for support. Thank you to everyone for your support!

The goal of the UNBROKEN center is to help Ukrainians remain UNBROKEN and get all the necessary help here, in their own country, near their families. The center provides physical, psychological and social rehabilitation. Each person receives not only a prosthesis, but also returns to a full life.
In a course of many years the Prosthetics Support Project in Ukraine has been helping Ukrainian prosthetists and rehabilitation specialists to develop and grow. This is an unbiased, non-profit project, the purpose of which is to develop the domestic industry of prosthetics and rehabilitation. The project brought new knowledge to Ukraine and Ukrainian specialists know how to work with components of different manufacturers and how to provide the patient with such a product that will allow him/her to return to the most natural way of life they used to have. Continuous consulting assistance is provided to both specialists and patients who need prosthetics; the Project specialists directly participate in trainings on the latest technologies; components for patients are selected taking into account the recommendations of foreign specialists with extensive experience.

Presently, the head of the company Oleksandr Stetsenko and his team manufacture upper and lower limb prostheses of any complexity for different degrees of amputation, using the most advanced technologies in the field of prosthetics.
