Soldier Oleksandr Protsenko, call sign KOK
My name is Liudmyla. I am the mother of Ukrainian defender Protsenko Oleksandr, call sign KOK. Oleksandr served as part of the 15th Border Detachment in the Sumy direction. On July 12, 2025, while carrying out a combat mission near the settlement of Sadky in Sumy Oblast he sustained extremely severe wounds to the head, neck, and spine, as a result of a mortar shelling… Then came months of hospitals, surgeries, intensive care units, and sleepless nights. The terrible diagnosis: a severe injury to the cervical spine with spinal cord contusion, severe brain damage, deep spastic tetraparesis. My son almost completely lost the ability to move independently. He underwent numerous complex surgeries and lengthy treatment in military hospitals… Today there are first results. He has already partially restored movement in his arms and legs. He can independently turn over in bed, sit up, and even walk short distances under the supervision of rehabilitation specialists.
But a very long road still lies ahead. My son still requires constant care and outside assistance. His body is held by strong spasticity, and every new movement comes through pain and exhaustion. That is why right now Oleksandr is in critical need of specialized rehabilitation at the “AGAPE” center. The doctors give hope that intensive recovery will help improve his condition. Unfortunately, our family does not have the means to pay for this rehabilitation course on its own.

Soldier Oleksandr Kushch, call sign KOSTOPRAV
I am 27 years old. Since August 2024 I have been serving under contract as a medic of the 36th Road Construction and Rehabilitation Brigade. I am a combat veteran, a Group III war invalid, but I remain an active serviceman to this day. While carrying out a combat mission in the Kherson direction, I had to jump into a revetment from a height of approximately two meters in order to hide from an FPV drone. The drone exploded just a few meters away from me. After that jump, doctors diagnosed me with a meniscus tear and incomplete tears of two cruciate ligaments of the left knee joint. I underwent surgery, completed rehabilitation, and returned to service. During another combat mission, a threat of a strike by guided aerial bombs arose. Running into shelter, I put more load on my right leg in order to protect the injured left knee. At that moment I felt a strong crunch in my right hip joint and a sharp pain… Doctors established the diagnosis — necrosis of both femoral heads. Today the disease has progressed. On the left it is already degree III, on the right — degree IV. The only chance to return to a full life is total endoprosthetic replacement of both hip joints. The surgery itself is free of charge for me. But it is necessary to independently purchase two high-quality hip joint endoprostheses. For me these are not simply medical devices. This is a chance to walk again without constant pain, to return to an active life and to the work I love.

Soldier Vitalii Ostash, call sign is SOKIL
On March 3, 2022, I voluntarily joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I served in the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade in the position of mortar crew commander. I sustained a severe wound while carrying out a combat mission near the settlement of Orikhovo-Vasylivka in Bakhmut district of Donetsk Oblast. The traumatic brain injury caused left-sided hemiparesis, and I lost consciousness. First aid was provided to me by my fellow soldiers… Doctors performed a craniotomy. I remained in a coma for two weeks. I was subsequently directed to Lviv. There the first stage of my rehabilitation began and a protective plate was installed. Thanks to the treatment and persistent work, my condition improved significantly, but much effort still lies ahead.
Today my main goals are to improve my walking and restore mobility in my left arm. For this I need to undergo specialized rehabilitation at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. This is an opportunity to become more independent, regain control over my own body.

Soldier Vladyslav Beloshytskyi
On April 14, 2022, I was conscripted into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I first served in Mykolaiv Oblast, and later found myself at the front line in Donetsk Oblast.
On May 5, while carrying out a combat mission in the village of Shandryholove, I sustained a severe injury — an extremely complex spinal trauma. After evacuation, a long fight for life began, several complex surgeries. I relearned how to live. I learned to move in a wheelchair, to take care of myself independently, underwent lengthy rehabilitation. After returning home and being discharged from service, I found myself in sport. I began training, participated in regional and all-Ukrainian competitions, and in 2025 represented Ukraine at the European Para Arm Wrestling Championship, where I won third place. But life had prepared yet another trial for me. Due to pressure sores I lost two lower limbs. This was yet another moment when everything had to be started from the beginning. Today I am once again going through a difficult path of recovery. In order to return to an active life, continue engaging in sport, be a support for my family, and remain strong, I need specialized rehabilitation at the “AGAPE UKRAINE” rehabilitation center. Unfortunately, the cost of such treatment is extremely high, and my family cannot manage these expenses on its own.

Soldier Serhii Kulinets
I am a major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and a combat veteran. In 2019 I enrolled at the Petro Sahaidachnyi National Army Academy for officer leadership courses. In 2020 I received the initial officer rank of junior lieutenant and was assigned to a military unit as a mechanized platoon commander. I connected my entire future with military service. But in 2021 my life changed. Returning from an official business trip from Kyiv, I was involved in a road accident. The injuries sustained were so severe that doctors were forced to amputate both of my lower limbs… I had to relearn how to move, use prostheses, and live under new circumstances. But even after the loss of both legs I did not leave the service. I served for as long as my health allowed. On June 1, 2026, I was discharged from the Armed Forces of Ukraine on health grounds. Today I am beginning a new stage of life. But in order to remain independent, move around, study, and work, I need proper prosthetics. The prosthetics center agreed with me on the manufacture of prostheses in minimum configuration — without a foot, knee joint, and adapters. However, even with such a configuration, the amount provided by the state program is insufficient. My first education is in law. In the future I plan to become a lawyer. I want to use my knowledge, military and life experience to help people who need legal protection.
For this I need to be able to move confidently, work, and live independently.

Soldier Serhii Obmaniuk
I am the wife of defender Serhii Obmaniuk.
My Serhii is a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. From January 2024 he served in military unit 4942 in the company for changing the directions of unmanned aerial vehicle movement and covering strategic and civilian objects. He worked throughout all of Ukraine, including in Kharkiv Oblast, where it was particularly dangerous. After one of his night combat duties, returning from service, Serhii was involved in a terrible road traffic accident. A severe traumatic brain injury. The doctors gave little chance of survival. Intensive care. Machines. Sleepless nights. Then came extremely complex surgeries, the installation of a large titanium plate, endless hospitals, rehabilitations, and a fight for every movement. We were told that there was almost no chance of independent movement… Today, after a year and a half of fighting, he has already restored his memory, regained his speech, and can move independently with the help of a cane. After the rehabilitation course at the “AGAPE UKRAINE” rehabilitation complex Serhii learned to walk short distances within an indoor space without additional devices, and longer distances — up to 800 meters — independently, using a single-point cane. He is also able to manage stairs, and has improved his endurance, balance, and walking speed. There is also important progress in speech. The wife of Serhii, Svitlana, approached the Citizen Charity Foundation with a request to help him undergo one more intensive rehabilitation course — a 14-day program at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. Despite the significant progress, Serhii still has a high risk of falling, limited mobility in daily life. The next course will be aimed at improving walking, speed, and endurance, strengthening the muscles of the lower limbs, developing coordination, and more actively engaging the arm in everyday activities.

Psychological rehabilitation for soldiers and their families. The Mazurenko Center (Lviv) and the "Citizen" Charitable Foundation are launching a psychological rehabilitation program for soldiers who were injured during the war. Psychologists of the Mazurenko Center clinic will conduct consultations in an online or offline format. Members of soldiers families can also receive assistance. To participate in the program, you need to fill out an application on the foundation's website. We work to preserve the physical and psychological health of Ukrainians.
Zakhydnyii Sports and Rehabilitation Center of the National Sports Committee for the Disabled of Ukraine today is one of best institutions for rehabilitation of Ukrainian war victims with the result of its work being the high level of social, psychological and physical rehabilitation. The center has developed special methods of rehabilitation including those for the psychological one. Working side by side with rehabilitologists, Ukrainian paralympian athletes are actively involved in rehabilitation processes as well. Rehabilitation through sports has a significant influence on patients' motivation and great positive effect on their return to full-fledged life.
An All-Ukrainian modern centre for prosthetics, reconstructive surgery, rehabilitation and psychological support for adults and children affected by war. The first stage of the centre was opened on 14 April 2023. The centre will employ more than sixty medical specialists. It is planned to treat about 3,000 patients annually. Superhumans uses a comprehensive approach to treatment and seeks to change the perception and psychological approach to Ukrainians who have suffered complex injuries and lost limbs. The prostheses will be manufactured and assembled in-house - the prosthetics laboratory was created with the participation of the leading German company Ottobock. The rehabilitation department has a large swimming pool and multifunctional physical therapy equipment.
