Soldier Serhii Obmaniuk
I am the wife of defender Serhii Obmaniuk.
My Serhii is a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. From January 2024 he served in military unit 4942 in the company for changing the directions of unmanned aerial vehicle movement and covering strategic and civilian objects. He worked throughout all of Ukraine, including in Kharkiv Oblast, where it was particularly dangerous. After one of his night combat duties, returning from service, Serhii was involved in a terrible road traffic accident. A severe traumatic brain injury. The doctors gave little chance of survival. Intensive care. Machines. Sleepless nights. Then came extremely complex surgeries, the installation of a large titanium plate, endless hospitals, rehabilitations, and a fight for every movement. We were told that there was almost no chance of independent movement… Today, after a year and a half of fighting, he has already restored his memory, regained his speech, and can move independently with the help of a cane. After the rehabilitation course at the “AGAPE UKRAINE” rehabilitation complex Serhii learned to walk short distances within an indoor space without additional devices, and longer distances — up to 800 meters — independently, using a single-point cane. He is also able to manage stairs, and has improved his endurance, balance, and walking speed. There is also important progress in speech. The wife of Serhii, Svitlana, approached the Citizen Charity Foundation with a request to help him undergo one more intensive rehabilitation course — a 14-day program at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. Despite the significant progress, Serhii still has a high risk of falling, limited mobility in daily life. The next course will be aimed at improving walking, speed, and endurance, strengthening the muscles of the lower limbs, developing coordination, and more actively engaging the arm in everyday activities.

Я офіцер 36-ї окремої бригади морської піхоти. З 2016 року я захищав Україну на Маріупольському напрямку. У березні 2022 року під час виконання бойового завдання під артилерійським обстрілом я отримав важке осколкове поранення лівої ноги з відкритим переломом великогомілкової кістки. 12 квітня 2022 року я потрапив у полон у Маріуполі. Я пережив теракт в Оленівці, потім було Камишинське СІЗО. Через поранення я не міг нормально ходити – увесь цей час пересувався, стрибаючи на одній нозі. Мене не зламали… Сьогодні я вдома. Я щиро вдячний кожному, хто зустрічав нас після повернення. Ці емоції неможливо забути. Зараз я проходжу лікування та передопераційну реабілітацію. У серпні 2026 року на мене чекає складна операція – коригуюча остеотомія великогомілкової кістки та артроскопія колінного суглоба. Після неї розпочнеться тривале відновлення. Лікарі прогнозують боротьбу із запаленням, набряком, болем та атрофією м’язів травмованої ноги. Крім того, значне навантаження припадатиме на здорову ногу та поперек. Саме тому вони рекомендують мені мати власний апарат електроміостимуляції. Для мене це не просто медичний прилад. Це можливість щодня підтримувати м’язи, зменшувати біль, пришвидшувати відновлення та пройти реабілітацію значно ефективніше.

On February 8, 2024, I entered service. My combat path went through Vovchansk, the Chornobyl zone, and the border of Volyn Oblast. Later our unit was transferred to the area of the Serebryansky Forests. Those were the most difficult positions.
At the positions we held out for fourteen days. Those exact fourteen days I do not remember. I do not remember the moment of the wounding either. My fellow soldiers told me it was a drop from a drone. The explosion threw my fellow soldier and me in different directions. I got the worst of it.
Everything that happened after that I know only from my wife’s words. She said: “The most difficult days began. The doctors said that the brain was barely responding. You were in a medically induced sleep. Then one evening I received a call saying that you were being transferred to the Kyiv Regional Hospital. I arrived there with fear, and the doctor came out of the intensive care unit and said: — Your husband is breathing on his own. The brain has begun to respond”.
On January 7 I was transferred to Lviv. My wife says that it was there that my new life began. The tracheostomy was gradually removed, they began to do away with catheters and medical equipment. The body began to fight. A few weeks later rehabilitation began. I relearned how to sit. I learned to maintain balance. I learned to control my body. Then came long months of rehabilitation at “Nezlamnykh,” at Next Step, and in Sianky. The doctors say that my traumatic brain injury is very severe, and every stage of recovery requires a great deal of time and effort. Today I am already able to dress myself, shave, and manage my daily needs independently. I go to my sessions on my own in an electric wheelchair. But I still cannot walk without outside assistance.
I need to undergo specialized rehabilitation at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the NCSPI. It is there that I have a chance to take one more step toward an independent life.

I am a father of three children. In 2022 I tried twice to volunteer for the front. I was refused because I had three minor children. On February 16, 2023, I voluntarily signed the documents and joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I was assigned to the engineering and sapper company of the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade and became a senior sapper. I fought in the Zaporizhzhia direction — Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne. On October 17, 2023, during an assault I sustained my first severe wound. A 120-millimeter mortar shell exploded next to me. The explosion tore off part of my buttock. Then came the stabilization point, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Khmelnytskyi, the Military Medical Commission. And almost without rest back to the front line again. At the beginning of February 2024, our brigade was redeployed to Donetsk Oblast, near Kurakhove. On February 8 we entered the settlement of Pobeda. For three days we were continuously attacked by drones, aerial bombs, and artillery. We held the defense.
On February 14 we took shelter in a small basement. At that moment a tank shell struck the building. The concrete ceiling collapsed. At that very second I had risen slightly, and this saved my life. I heard my spine break…
In the night of February 18 we were pulled out from under the rubble… Kurakhove, the stabilization point, Dnipro, intensive care. On February 19, due to severe frostbite, doctors were forced to amputate both of my lower limbs. More than 30 surgeries. I spent six months in a lying position. A month and a half of rehabilitation in the hospital and I learned again to move independently in a wheelchair. A year and a half ago I could not feel my own body from my chest down to my toes. Today I can already feel cold and warmth down to my waist. I am alive. For further recovery I need specialized rehabilitation at the “AGAPE” center. It is there that I have a chance to continue my recovery, strengthen my body, improve motor functions, and take one more step toward a full life alongside my family. And here I cannot manage on my own, so I am compelled to ask for help.

I am originally from Africa. I came to Ukraine in 2023. I did not consider it fair that Ukraine was attacked and that Ukrainians were forced to suffer simply because they wanted to decide for themselves how to live in their own country. During my service I participated in combat operations near Lyptsi and Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast, in Sumy Oblast, and in the Pokrovsk and Zaporizhzhia directions. In "Khartiya" I served as a group commander and senior mechanic. One day our medical position came under fire from Russian artillery. We received a call for the evacuation of the wounded. I got into the vehicle and set off to pick up the guys.
We found the wounded and took them. But on the way back the vehicle hit a mine. As a result of the explosion, I lost my right leg, my right arm, and part of the fingers on my left hand. In addition, I sustained multiple shrapnel wounds to the head, face, chest, and limbs, a traumatic brain injury, burns to the face and both eyes, and damage to the right eye. Today I am undergoing treatment and rehabilitation. I have already undergone surgeries to form the stumps of the amputated limbs, autodermoplasty (closure of the soft tissue defect) on the left hand, and ophthalmic surgical interventions. Ahead lies a lengthy recovery and preparation for prosthetics. Due to the high-level amputation of the right arm and the complete absence of all fingers of the left hand, I require outside assistance in daily life and everyday activities. Prosthetics of the fingers of the left hand will give me the ability to independently perform the most basic daily actions right now. It will also increase my chances in the future of properly mastering prostheses: putting them on independently, using them, and operating their functions. That is why the most important thing for me right now is a prosthesis for the fingers of the left hand. Without it I will not be able to begin the next stage learning to walk with a leg prosthesis.
The full cost of the prosthesis that suits me is 1,071,180.97 UAH. Taking into account the state payment of 171,459.00 UAH, the remaining cost amounts to 899,721.97 UAH. As of now, a portion of the amount has already been partially raised, and 551,837.83 UAH still needs to be collected. For me this amount is beyond my means, so I am compelled to ask for help.

Soldier Vladyslav Shmalionov, call sign DZHONYK
I am the mother of Vladyslav Shmalionov, our DZHONYK. When the full-scale invasion began, Vlad voluntarily went to the military recruitment office. In May 2022, he was sent to defend Lyman. Then came the difficult front roads of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts, including the Pokrovsk direction as part of the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade. In August 2025, Vlad sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and numerous injuries to internal organs and limbs. The doctors gave minimal chances of survival. He underwent decompressive craniectomy, sustained severe lung damage, multiple rib fractures, bilateral pneumothorax, a ruptured spleen, and severe injuries to internal organs. The consequences of the injuries remain extremely severe today. He also has a non-united fracture of the left humerus, underwent numerous surgical interventions, and remained in critical condition for a prolonged period. Today Vlad needs to relearn how to maintain balance, to restore the use of his hands, to relearn how to think, speak, and perform actions that are ordinary for each of us. From May 25 to June 14, 2026, Vladyslav is scheduled to undergo specialized health and rehabilitation activities at the “AGAPE Ukraine” rehabilitation center. The program includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, as well as gym sessions. It is this rehabilitation that offers a chance for further recovery and the return of lost skills. But for our family, covering all the necessary costs on our own is very difficult.

Leading prosthetics company, which manufactured and fitted its first prosthesis in 1992. Presently, the head of the company Oleksandr Stetsenko and his team manufacture upper and lower limb prostheses of any complexity for different degrees of amputation, using the most advanced technologies in the field of prosthetics.
Help Army is one of Ukraine's largest and most visible volunteer aid organisations supporting the Ukrainian military. It provides technical, material, medical and other assistance to soldiers, as well as support for the demobilised, children of demobilised parents and residents of affected communities. It operates in co-operation with the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. Through the charitable foundation "Kharkiv with You" established by Help Army, the latter carries out various humanitarian projects. In particular, the Help Army's Music Battalion has been active since 2014 and it has held about 1,000 concerts on the front line. Help Army was awarded the non-governmental Order "People's Hero of Ukraine" (2015), and members of the organisation were awarded state and non-governmental awards.
Zakhydnyii Sports and Rehabilitation Center of the National Sports Committee for the Disabled of Ukraine today is one of best institutions for rehabilitation of Ukrainian war victims with the result of its work being the high level of social, psychological and physical rehabilitation. The center has developed special methods of rehabilitation including those for the psychological one. Working side by side with rehabilitologists, Ukrainian paralympian athletes are actively involved in rehabilitation processes as well. Rehabilitation through sports has a significant influence on patients' motivation and great positive effect on their return to full-fledged life.
