Roman Kashpur, a Ukrainian soldier with a prosthetic leg and ambassador of the Citizen Charity Foundation, is preparing to run the US Marine Corps Marathon in Washington on 29 October 2023, and 7 days later, on 5 November, he will try to run the New York City Marathon.
Running two world marathons in the United States within a week of each other is a new personal challenge for Roman, whose goal is to support his severely wounded comrades, draw the world's attention to the terrible consequences of russian aggression in Ukraine.
This is a tough challenge for Roman, as he is not a paralympic athlete. He is a war veteran who, having been seriously injured, managed to recover, and now, with his own example, wants to show the world that life should be joyful, and even despite severe injuries, one must gather the will and keep fighting! Roman's achievements motivate his severely wounded comrades not to lose heart after being injured, to find the strength to stand up and live a full life. Roman’s main message is: amputation is not a stigma, a prosthesis does not mean limitation, and disability is just a record on paper that does not restrict a person in any way!
Roman ran his first full marathon distance in April 2023 at the London Marathon, becoming the first Ukrainian military veteran to complete a marathon on a prosthesis.
By running the marathon, the Citizen Foundation's team and Roman raise funds for prosthetics and rehabilitation for soldiers with complex amputations, which require significant funds. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ukraine's economy has been experiencing considerable difficulties, the exchange rate of the US dollar and EURO has risen, which, in turn, has significantly affected the pricing of prosthetic products not only in Ukraine but also around the world. Hence, until our state solves the problem of expanding the social protection package at the legislative level, which in turn will allow one to have a high-quality prosthesis, we will continue to raise funds and help the seriously wounded with prosthetics and rehabilitation.
