Soldier Serhii, call sign MOLFAR

My name is Serhii, call sign MOLFAR. I serve in the 12th Special Purpose Brigade “Azov” of the National Guard of Ukraine. I joined the war back in 2014 as a volunteer when Russia began its aggression against our country. At that moment, I made a firm decision: if I didn’t stand to defend Ukraine, who would?

My life changed drastically in March 2022 at Azovstal. During an enemy airstrike, I sustained severe injuries: both bones in my left leg were broken, shrapnel damaged my abdomen, and my pelvis was fractured. I didn’t lose consciousness and provided first aid to myself, with the help of a comrade who was nearby.

The evacuation was extremely challenging. Initially, I was taken to a military hospital in Mariupol, but two days later, it was destroyed by an airstrike. I was returned to Azovstal, to an underground shelter where our doctors had set up an improvised hospital. The helicopter evacuation from complete encirclement felt like a miracle, marking the beginning of my long road to recovery.

By the fall of 2022, after months of treatment, I was able to stand on my feet again. Without hesitation, I returned to duty. At the time, many of our comrades were still in captivity, and I knew I had to keep fighting. However, due to a lack of rehabilitation, overexertion, and complications, I had to undergo another surgery in the fall of last year.

Now, my primary goal is to eliminate the constant pain in my leg and walk without limitations again. Doctors say this is possible if I undergo high-quality rehabilitation at the “Western Rehabilitation and Sports Center” of the National Sports Committee of Ukraine. This place gives me the chance to return to a full life, continue the fight, and achieve my dream.

And my dream is simple, yet so important to me — to return to Mariupol, to see my home and the city I defended.
