The Rehabilitation for Cyborgs program in the USCC of prosthetics and rehabilitation and in the FORTIS MC

In Kharkiv, the Citizen Charitable Foundation is implementing the Rehabilitation for Cyborgs program in cooperation with the Ukrainian scientific and clinical center of prosthetics and rehabilitation (USCC) and on an outpatient basis at the FORTIS medical and rehabilitation centre

The combination of the expertise of the two medical centres ensures a multidisciplinary approach, which helps to achieve better results in the recovery of seriously injured people.

Dozens of patients have already undergone rehabilitation as part of the program.

Nicholas and Viktor are participants of the Rehabilitation for the Cyborgs program.

Soldier Nicholas entered rehabilitation in March 2024 after suffering a fractured femur and nerve damage as a result of a mine-blast injury. Due to the complex fracture, a metal plate was implanted, and the right lower limb became 5 cm shorter than the left. He also developed foot paresis. At the beginning of his rehabilitation, he experienced muscle hypotrophy, which made it impossible for him to do any exercise without the help of a rehabilitation therapist.

During his rehabilitation at the USCC, he was trained on unique simulators, which the institute has been equipped with since 2018. Nicholas was fitted with a special orthosis to compensate for the difference in the length of his limbs and help him fix his foot.

At the   FORTIS medical and rehabilitation centre, he had individual sessions with a rehabilitation therapist, massage and physiotherapy twice a week. Significant positive dynamics in the restoration of thigh muscles and improvement of knee joint function have been observed. Unfortunately, the dysfunction of the right foot remains. In the future, an operation to restore the length of the shortened limb is planned.
Nicholas is patient, and even when it hurts a lot during the exercises, he says that everything is fine and continues to do the exercises. Recently, he was able to walk through the central park without any assistance.

Soldier Viktor was admitted to rehabilitation for shrapnel wounds to his upper limb. The doctors believe that the chances of full restoration of the arm's functions are possible with the surgery planned for the near future. But before the surgery, it was necessary to prepare the muscles and ligaments of the arm.

At the Ukrainian scientific and clinical center of prosthetics and rehabilitation, Viktor worked with an occupational therapist, practiced exercises on special simulators, and underwent a massage course.

At the FORTIS medical and rehabilitation centre, he had individual lessons with a rehabilitation therapist twice a week. During the lessons, special attention was paid to exercises with objects of non-standard shape to develop fine motor skills as much as possible, and passive exercises to restore the mobility of the wrist.
The rehabilitation specialists' prognosis is overall positive. But a large percentage of success will depend on Viktor himself. There is still a lot of work ahead, and we are not stopping.
