Soldier Serhii Osoblyvets, callsign SERYI

I am a volunteer. On February 25, 2022, the day after the full-scale invasion began, I went to the military enlistment office on my own. There was no hesitation, only the desire to protect my home, my loved ones, and my country.

I served as part of the 153rd Battalion of the 117th Sumy Territorial Defense Brigade. I carried out combat missions on the front line: in the Bakhmut district, Lyman, and Krasnohorivka. Unfortunately, I was wounded more than once, but each time, after treatment, I returned to duty. However, my service in Krasnohorivka changed everything.

During an artillery attack, while we were holding our position, a fragment of a wall fell on me. I suffered a contusion of the hip joint and a concussion, and I was trapped under the rubble. My comrades pulled me out from under the debris. But even after that, I held the position for another week until the pain in my pelvis became unbearable, and I developed renal colic and an exacerbation of prostatitis.

I was evacuated to Hospital No. 4 in Dnipro. There, they performed surgery to remove a kidney stone and treated the prostatitis. At that time, I barely paid attention to the pain in my hip joint because the renal colic was excruciating — it seemed like that was the main problem.

But over time, it became clear: the pelvic pain wasn’t going away; it was only getting worse. I started walking with a cane, then with crutches. And only after a detailed examination at the National Military Medical Clinical Center in Kyiv did it become clear — the issue wasn’t just with my kidneys. I was given a final diagnosis: stage 3 deforming coxarthrosis of the right hip joint, with severe pain and limited mobility.

The Medical and Social Expert Commission denied me disability status. They said: “Get the prosthesis, then come back again.”

The military medical commission declared me unfit for service. I can no longer walk without pain. I can’t live a normal life. At first, I used a cane, now I’m on crutches. I dream of simply standing on my own two feet, going outside on my own, walking to the store like before, taking care of everyday tasks without pain.

To make this possible, doctors recommend urgent total hip replacement surgery on the right side. A high-quality implant that will last me for decades is expensive, and unfortunately, the state does not provide them. Therefore, I am forced to ask for the help of those who care.

My dream is to return to a normal life without pain, without crutches, without daily painkillers that hardly help anymore.
